     About Osgoode

Ranked # 1 in the 2006 and 2008 Canadian Lawyer law school surveys, Osgoode Hall Law School of York University has a proud history of more than 100 years of leadership and innovation in legal education and legal scholarship.

Osgoode has a total of about 900 students enrolled in its three-year Juris Doctor (JD) Program and students can choose to graduate with a concentration in one of four Curricular Streams:  International; Labour; Litigation and Tax Law

The Tax program is one of Osgoode Hall Law School’s many strengths.  Three full-time faculty members devote their energies primarily to teaching and researching tax law and related public policy issues: Professors Neil Brooks, Jinyan Li and Lisa Philipps.  The tax and related curriculum is rich and diverse.  Teaching and research in tax law at Osgoode reflects the following assumptions.  First, tax law is one of the most pervasive forms of legal regulation in contemporary liberal societies.  It shapes most commercial and business transactions from the simplest contract to the most complex corporate reorganization.  Further, every major public policy issue has a tax angle.  Second, tax law can only be understood if the policy and theory underlying it is understood.  Much of this policy and theory is within the domain of other disciplines and therefore the study of tax law is necessarily interdisciplinary.  Third, like all areas of law, tax law can only be understood if it is examined from a wide range of perspectives.

With York’s Schulich School of Business and the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Osgoode also offers three or four-year programs leading to the JD/MBA degree and a four-year program leading to the JD/MES degree.  In addition, Osgoode has a four-year program with New York University School of Law leading to a JD (Osgoode)/JD (NYU) and a 3.5-year program leading to a JD/LLM.

We are also extremely proud of our research centres and units at Osgoode including the two newest centres of excellence – the Jay and Barbara Hennick Centre for Business and Law and IP Osgoode, our Intellectual Property Law and Technology Program.  You can find thematic information on our faculty’s latest research at Osgoode Knowledge http://www.osgoode.yorku.ca/research/knowledge/index.html

Osgoode’s Graduate Program in Law, with its thesis-based Master of Laws (LLM) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs, is the largest in the country and one of the most highly regarded in North America. The Osgoode Professional Development Program, which operates out of its own centre in downtown Toronto and is unique in Canada, offers numerous specialized part-time LLM programs that run on varying cycles as well as Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses.

This conference would normally be held at our York University location, but we are currently undergoing a much-needed renovation and expansion of our 41-year-old building.  The construction, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2011, will transform Osgoode’s building into one of our greatest assets, giving us a student-centred facility that is the best among Canadian law schools and among the best in North America.
